MEDICARE PART D FOR ‘DUAL ELIGIBLES’

On January 1, 2006, Medicare offered its 43 million enrollees a new drug prescription benefit — Medicare Part D.

This benefit was voluntary for most Medicare beneficiaries. However, Part D replaced Medicaid for people who qualified for both Medicare and Medicaid, a group known as ‘dual eligibles’. These beneficiaries were automatically switched to drug coverage under Part D when the benefit was implemented.
